so i checked my babycenter update this morning and off to the side, almost like an "in case you didnt already know..." there was a little box that stated, "its a fact: in your baby's first year, he/she will soak and soil his/her way through nearly 3,000 diapers." and i thought, how kind of them! like us mommies dont already feel ALL we do is change diapers. now we have this friendly reminder of just how many we actually change! and lest we not forget, that's just ONE baby.
what if you have two babies in diapers? if your kids are two years apart you are already down approx 6,000 diapers by the time you have your second baby. and with a second baby of course its twice as many diapers. by the time the new baby is six months old you've already hit your 3,000 mark for the year. so if i have a two and half year old and a six month old, i have changed 9,000 diapers in the past two and half years. whew!
lets do some math, shall we? 3,000 diapers a year for one baby comes to approx 250 diapers a month....57 diapers a week....8 diapers a day.....and if your baby sleeps 8 hours a night...we are changing diapers at least every two hours...and thats just one of our babies.
these are not all nice and easy wet diapers. they're stinky, poopy, muddy, exploding diarrhea, diaper rash causing diapers. one of the worse ways to start off a day is getting a child out of bed only to find that their diaper has not done its over-night job in containing a child's over-night mess. all over the baby, all over their clothes, all over their bed....and all this before your morning coffee. you put baby to bed with a nice clean, fresh diaper and somehow through the night its not so much anymore. and of course some of this can be taken care of by your choice of diaper brand....
we have luvs, pampers, huggies, whitecloud, parentschoice, seventh generation, cloth, tendercare, up&up.... and unfortunately, its all through trial and error. as for myself, i've never used anything but pampers on my newborns. they just seem to be better against their skin better at containing a newborn runny mess. then we graduate normally to luvs or huggies. huggies just seem to fit and conture to their bodies better as they are starting to be more active and mobile. cloth diapers...i applaud any mommy using them.
and we cant forget about wipes!!! they in themselves are a lesson of trial and error. i, to this day, do not understand why a compay would produces a product to be used on such a sensitive area that is literally like wet sandpaper or a wet paper towel. hello! soft, moist these should be a no-brainer. i like the walmart brand sensitive skin wipes. so far they have worked the best for us. with kids who indeed have very sensitive skin they are wonderful. and of course they are great for cleaning up any sort of baby mess you can think of.
but thank goodness we have so much to choose from, so many resources at our disposal, so many products that are available for us to decide what is best for our precious little one's little tushy. im glad that i am here even in those not so fun moments of changing nasty diapers for and with my babies because what would life be without these little joys of mommyhood.
